Blue spectrum light promotes vegetative growth, while red spectrum light promotes flower onset and production. The ideal lighting situation for a specific growth requirement would therefore be to use these two different wavelengths during the early stages and the flowering phase.

Besides the right light spectrum, plants also need the right light intensity for an appropriate growth, commonly measured by the photon flux, i.e. units of micromoles per square meter per second, that indicates how much light energy is available for plants to use in photosynthesis.
